Blocks out most of the sunlight
I’m so happy with this sun block cloth. I live in Florida and the sun beams into my garage door. I have a 2 car garage and the garage door is 16 feet across. I purchased the 16 foot sun block screen and it fits perfectly. I’m a DIYer and spend a lot of time in my garage. I have a projection TV and the light causes problems with the projection. I wanted to do something that didn’t require nail of anything permanent. This sun block screen is held up with magnets and blocks out most of the bright light and sun and does it at a.very reasonable price. I’m also hoping that the screen will help keep the temperature down in the garage. Happy with purchase.

Very fragile
There’s a lot I like about this shade cloth. I like how lightweight it is. I like how much sun it blocks. This is actually the third shade cloth made out of this material that I’ve used. The first one was a different brand and a different color. It was tan in color, but still 90% sun blocking, supposedly. It was very light underneath, which my wife and I found confusing since it was supposed to block 90% of the sun. We actually thought it was only blocking 10% of the sun because of how light it was. And then one day, 6 of the eyelets pulled out and gave us a reason to warranty the product. But Amazon refunded our money instead. This is when we learned that the shade cloth we purchased was only single-stitched and not double or even six-stitched. That is how we came to buy our first shade cloth of this brand. It is six-stitched, and it seemed more durable because of that feature. About 3 weeks later, I noticed a tear in the cloth. When I got up on top and looked at the shade cloth, I noticed one of the eyelets pulling out. I started a warranty claim and accepted a replacement solar shade. While I waited for the new solar shade to be delivered, we had some fair winds of about 25-30 mph come through, and the shade cloth shredded. As I installed the new cloth today, I looked at how the cloth is made. It’s not any kind of cloth that I’m familiar with. It looks like it’s plastic that has been sprayed through a clogged spray gun. It is some kind of plastic that is very flexible and very stretchy, just like the description says, “Shade Cloth Made from high density polyethylene which is lightweight but durable. The material provides maximum airflow and stretch-ability.” It is all of these things, but durable.I love the dark color for keeping my house cool on days where the temperature exceeds 100 degrees Farenheight. It keeps the plants in the front yard safe from the sun killing them. But it is very, very fragile. I won’t be buy this material again.

Protects Plants from Sun Damage
The shade cloth saved my tomato plants from burning on really sunny days. Also bought a few others for delicate plants. Easy to put over plants and remove. Doesn’t hurt plants at all. Really helps plants survive the sun’s strongest rays.

Tips
What this product category is & key featuresA “shade cloth” rated at 70-90% means it blocks about 70-90% of direct sunlight (and thus a large portion of heat and UV) while still allowing some light, air and water through. Good for protecting plants, patio spaces, kennels, etc. For example:• One listing: “Made from high density polyethylene … our Shade Cloth … blocks rays and most sunlight while air can still flow through”. • Another reference notes: the manufacturer’s specs show “85-90%” UV cover as “entry level” heavy-duty shade cloth. • Reviews mention ease of installation, temperature reduction under the cloth, and grommets/reinforced edges. Typical features & what they mean:• Shade rate (70-90%): Higher percentage means more sunlight blocked—good for very hot, full-sun zones or plants which prefer less intense sun.• Material: Usually HDPE (high-density polyethylene) mesh/net, breathable. Allows air & rain through so you don’t trap moisture/heat. • Reinforced edges/grommets or tie points: Important for durability—if you mount under tension or in wind, weak edges will fail. • Install flexibility: Can be used for gardens, patios, pergolas, greenhouses, chicken coops etc. The same material works for shading people & plants. ⸻👍 Strengths / what users likeFrom user reviews and forums:• Many users state significant cooling effect. For example, under one shade cloth people noticed noticeable temperature drop. • Helps plants survive intense sun in hot climates. On Reddit:“It’s a total game changer in hot sunny climates.” • Allows water/air through so plants can still breathe and you avoid full blackout.• Versatile: also used for patios/human-shade, pet runs, etc. Good multi-purpose.• Good value for money in many cases—one review of a 70% version noted solid build for its price. ⸻👎 Weaknesses / things to watch out• Over-blocking light: If you choose too high a shade % (e.g., 90%) for plants that need a lot of direct sun (tomatoes, peppers, etc), you might reduce growth or fruiting. One Reddit user said:“It did help control the heat … but it seemed to slow down the overall growth and maturity of the tomatoes and peppers.” • Durability concerns: Some users report tearing under wind or corners/grommets ripping if not well reinforced. For example:“Tore apart in the first 10 mph wind… threads at the corner were loose.” • Installation effort: Big pieces may be cumbersome to mount; may require support framing. One user noted size was “cumbersome” for single person. • Shade % claims vs real world: Some users note that the “70%” or “90%” is approximate and may vary; the impact on plants depends on region/climate. For example:“They all said ‘up to’ 90% shade… So they could be anywhere on the spectrum.” • Choosing the right %: Many forums suggest lower % (30-60%) for many vegetable gardens, especially in less extreme sun zones, to still allow enough light for fruiting. Example:“I’m in NE Texas… using 40%… first time gardening this far south…” ⸻🎯 My verdict & recommendationFor a shade cloth rated 70-90% sun-block, I’d give it about 8/10 for use in very sunny/hot climates or for plants which tolerate lower light but need high protection from heat/UV. For moderate climates or plants needing high light I’d rate it 6-7/10 (because there’s risk of over‐shading or reduced growth). When I’d recommend this:• You live in a very hot or full-sun region (e.g., Southwest US, deserts) and need to protect plants from scorch, high heat, midday sun.• You’re covering patio or using for shade for people/pets and want a high shade rate.• You’re okay with slightly reduced direct light but want big gains in heat/UV reduction. When I’d caution or pick a lower %:• If you grow high-light crops (tomatoes, peppers, fruiting plants) in moderate climate – you may want 50-70% instead of near 90%.• If the installation is exposed to high wind and you don’t have strong support – you’ll want reinforced construction & good edges.• If you’re on a budget and only need moderate shading (part afternoon sun) you might pick a lower cost, lower % cloth.

not the best shade, rips easily unless tied down completely
was expecting more from this shade cloth…. i bought this shade for a backyard patio area and it worked for a couple days before it ripped. first putting it up, we felt the heat bouncing off of it directly which is what we hoped would happen. underneath the shade, it was much cooler. when it rained, rain was able to slide off or go through the net. though the net needs to be fully supported by a pole or some other support because by itself, the lining by the holes come apart and ripped right off where it was tied down. the material felt kinda thin for a net so air easily pulls it and rips the lining if the shade cloth is moving back and forth. would have been better if the lining was stronger or was listed that this needed some support other than loosely hanging or just tied by itself.
